Papa’s Pilar® Embarks On a New Adventure Alongside 2016 Olympic Sailing Hopefuls

Key West, Florida (October 1, 2014) – Papa’s Pilar®, the super-premium rum inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s spirit of adventure, announced plans today to support U.S. Sailing hopefuls Sarah Newberry and John Casey in their quest to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Newberry/Casey are the top ranked U.S. Olympic Nacra 17 (performance catamaran used for racing) Team, and multiple-time National and North American Champions in a variety of high-performance, high-speed, multihull classes.  John is one of the most accomplished multihull sailors in the U.S. as both helm and crew, and Sarah is the top ranked female helm (driver) in the Western Hemisphere.

From October 19-24, the duo will compete in the National Championships in Corpus Christi, Texas.  Then, it’s off to Miami for three important events: the U.S. Training Camp (December 16-21), North American Championships (January 17-19, 2015) and ISAF World Cup (January 27-31, 2015).  Papa’s Pilar will join Newberry/Casey on their Olympic journey at these and other events, speaking engagements and regattas.  As part of the partnership, the team’s boat and uniforms will bear the Papa’s Pilar logo as they compete, travel and explore the world.  Along the way, the award-winning rum hopes to inspire the team to live as Hemingway did.

“Papa’s Pilar is proud to support Sarah and John as they embark upon their biggest adventure to date,” said Lindsey Kops, brand director for Papa’s Pilar.  “Like our award-winning rum, they are bold, well-traveled, and uniquely American.  These tremendous athletes truly embody the brand’s ‘Never A Spectator’ mentality.”

“The way we live and compete is a reflection of our sense of adventure,” said John Casey.  “With a deep love of the ocean, we immerse ourselves into each event and challenge on and off the water.  Like Hemingway, we don’t spectate…we live.”

PAPA’S PILAR RUM

Papa’s Pilar Rum is meant to rekindle a sense of adventure in us all.  “Papa” as Ernest Hemingway was known, was possibly the world’s greatest adventurer.  Papa’s Pilar was crafted to be near that same adventure, accompanying rum enthusiasts as they sink their teeth into life.  Named for his muse and one true constant, Pilar is the vessel that allowed America’s literary giant to reach beyond the shoreline, feast on life and remind us to never be a spectator.

Papa’s Pilar Dark and Blonde are born of the finest rums and pay homage to Hemingway’s exploits on land and sea, respectively.  Each is hand-selected from ports-of-call throughout the Caribbean, Central America and the U.S.A. for their age and distinct character.  Once brought to the U.S.A., the Papa’s Pilar team of Master Blenders artfully marry the rums in a unique solera aging and blending process, using American Oak Bourbon barrels, Port Wine casks, and finishing in Spanish Sherry casks.

Papa’s Pilar Dark, which was awarded “a Double Gold” Medal at the 2013 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, is a bold and complex rum.  At 86-proof, it is both pot and column stilled and boasts hand-selected rums up to 24 years old, and a long, velvety finish.  Papa’s Pilar Blonde is a crisp and nuanced rum, which includes column stilled aged rums 3-7 years old.  At 84-proof, it has a layered and exceptionally smooth finish.  Papa’s Pilar Blonde was awarded “Best in Class” White Rum at the 2013 Rum Renaissance Festival in Miami, Florida.

Every aspect of Papa’s Pilar is thoughtful and purposeful.  The distinct bottle evokes Papa’s exploits through a form factor reminiscent of an iconic WWII canteen.  The etched compass closure reflects that same sense of adventure on either land or sea, and the chain link makes it practical for any excursion.  The lion heads represent nobility while the Rooster on the Medallion pays homage to Key West, an island where Hemingway and his boat Pilar once resided and remain celebrated fixtures within the community.

Papa’s Pilar was developed in conjunction with Ernest Hemingway’s estate.  The Hemingway family will donate 100 percent of their royalty profits to organizations that embody the likes of adventure, literacy, and conservation, causes dear to Hemingway and his heirs.  In 2013, the Family made a $30,000 donation to the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), a highly reputable worldwide organization that embodies many of Ernest Hemingway’s core values, from sport and adventure to protection of natural resources.

Papa’s Pilar rums are currently available in 750ml bottles in both on- and off-premise accounts in California, Florida, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas and Washington, DC.  The suggested retail price of the Dark and Blonde are $39.99 and $29.99, respectively.  Prices may vary by market.

Papa’s Pilar plans to break ground on a new distillery and experience center in 2014 in Key West, Florida.  For more information, visit www.papaspilar.com, “like” us on Facebook and follow us on twitter and Instagram @papaspilar.  Rum enthusiasts can also search for #papaspilar, #papawouldbeproud, #neveraspectator, #hemingwayday, #livethelegend

Angel’s Envy Announces Cask Strength Limited-Edition Release

Louisville, Kentucky (September 24, 2014) – Louisville Distilling Company is proud to announce the limited-edition release of the critically acclaimed Angel’s Envy Cask Strength.  The Expression will be available this October in select markets including: CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MI, NJ, NY, OR, TN, TX, WA.  Due to the scarcity of barrels necessary for the enhanced finishing process, Angel’s Envy will only release 6,500 bottles.  Previous releases quickly sold out.

Named “best spirit in the world” by Paul Pacult in the June 2013 edition of Spirit Journal, Cask Strength shared top honors with a 25-year-old single malt whisky that sold for nearly twice the price.  In his review, Pacult awarded the brand five stars – his highest recommendation – noting, “this masterpiece deserves a sixth rating star.”

As with Angel’s Envy, the super-premium bourbon of uncompromising character and quality, Cask Strength is aged to the perfect level of richness and maturity (up to seven years) in the few American white oak barrels that made the cut.  The barrels are then blended into a single batch and finished in hand-selected port casks.

Cask Strength is rare and rich bourbon worth savoring,” said Wes Henderson, Chief Innovation Officer, Angel’s Envy.  “The first couple of releases sold out quickly so we’re thrilled to make it even more widely available this year.”

The suggested retail price for a 750ml bottle, which may vary by market, is $169.  A remarkably complex bourbon at 119.3-proof and 59.65% alcohol by volume, Cask Strength is best enjoyed with just a bit of water to release the flavor nuances.

Angel’s Envy Cask Strength Tasting Notes

Color: Deep Amber red tint, coppery

Nose: Toffee, Butterscotch, Toasted Oak, Cherries, Ripe Peach, Berry Jam, Vanilla, notes of banana

Palate: Lots of port notes: Cherries, Oak, raisins. Still get a beautiful bourbon feel with Vanilla, Honey, a butter velvet feel, a little bit of clove spice, honeysuckle

Finish/Feel: Glides around your palate, lingers for a few moments, but not too long as to keep you from another sip. Add some water and it opens nicely. Warm and sweet, but still tingly.

Bottle Signing Events

Angel’s Envy will host exclusive bottle signing events with members of the Henderson family from December 2014 through April 2015 for those that purchase Cask Strength.  An insert on each bottle shares a URL with more information about the events.

Angel’s Envy Distillery

The Angel’s Envy distillery will be located in downtown Louisville, on the corner of Main Street and Jackson, bringing the great tradition of Kentucky bourbon-making back to the city.  The new state-of-the-art distillery and brand experience center will make a great starting point for the Bourbon Trail and be open to the public for guided tours.  Louisville Distilling Company expects the new distillery to be up and running in 2015.

About Louisville Distilling Company LLC

Louisville Distilling Company LLC is the proud producer of the highly celebrated Angel’s Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.  The small batch artisan port-finished bourbon, which is hand-blended in small batches of 8-12 barrels and allowed to develop naturally, is the culmination of the late Master Distiller Lincoln Henderson’s storied career.  The award-winning flagship Expression, which is available in more than 30 U.S. markets, earned 98/100 points from Wine Enthusiast magazine – the highest-ever rating for a bourbon.  The Company also offers Angel’s Envy Rye, which is finished in Caribbean rum casks and Angel’s Envy Cask Strength, which Paul Pacult of Spirit Journal named the “Best Spirit in the World.”  Each Expression exhibits Lincoln’s passion for experimenting outside of conventional norms and producing unique whiskey steeped in tradition, but finished with a twist.

The Movember Foundation Calls on Americans to Grow Their Hairy Ribbon for Men’s Health

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – (September 23, 2013) – Official Moustache season is here! The Movember Foundation enters its 11th year as the leading global organization to change the face of men’s health.  Starting today, men and women are encouraged to become an official participant by signing up at Movember.com and committing to grow and support the moustache – and only the moustache – during Movember, the month formerly known as November.

Movember challenges men to start clean-shaven on November 1 and grow just a moustache for 30 days, getting friends, family and colleagues to donate to their moustache-growing efforts. The growth of a moustache sparks conversations and raises vital funds for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems. To date, the Movember community has raised over $550 million and funded over 800 programs in 21 countries.

“Now, more than ever, is a critical time to raise funds and awareness for men’s health,” said Mark Hedstrom, U.S. Country Director at Movember.  “Over the last 11 years, the moustache has become the symbol for men’s health, with over 4 million men and women participating in the Movember movement. Together, we are making a change and reducing stigmas so that men can take action for their physical and mental wellbeing.”

Movember 2013 was the largest, most significant campaign the US has ever seen. Over 219,000 men and women signed up on Movember.com and raised nearly $23 million for men’s health.  Globally, the Movember Foundation is focused on men’s health, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health.

Details about the more than 800 programs that Movember has funded can be found on the funded programs page on Movember.com.

  • Prostate Cancer: 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. In the US, the Movember Foundation funds world-class research and survivorship programs through our Global Action Plan (GAP), the Prostate Cancer Foundation, and the LIVESTRONG Foundation. Through these programs, we are funding first in field, research teams focused on accelerating progress towards the reduction of death and suffering due to recurrent or advanced prostate cancer and programs to support men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer as well as their families and caregivers.
  • Testicular Cancer: Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged 15-35 years. For men diagnosed with testicular cancer, we seek to improve their physical and mental health, and reduce mortality.  In the US, the Movember Foundation funds have supported our Global Action Plan (GAP) and the LIVESTRONG Foundation’s Cancer Navigation Services.
  • Mental Health: Men are 4 times more likely to die of suicide than women. Since 2006, the Movember Foundation has funded mental health programs in Australia and New Zealand, and since 2013 in Canada. Movember is currently working with industry experts to lay the foundation for the mental health initiative that Movember will be funding in the U.S.  Movember is focused on the these key areas in mental health:
  • Prevention – men and boys are mentally healthy and take action to remain so.
  • Early intervention – when men and boys experience mental health problems they take action early.
  • Stigma reduction – men and boys with mental health problems are not discriminated against.

The new “Made in Movember” campaign theme encourages the community to focus on thinking globally and acting locally. Once signed up at Movember.com, participants become part of the global movement and utilize their personalized fundraising page to get friends, family, and colleagues to donate to their efforts.
